Storm of the Century? Sandy Arrives Today

The wind is rising; it has been since about 9 am. And that’s when the rain began. Both the wind and rain come and go, but I know they’ll both be here to stay in a matter of hours.

I’ve been pacing the house. Watching. Waiting. I’m not good at waiting. Are you?

This is what I saw in my back yard before 1pm today:

Not bad, but definitely deteriorating.

I worry about our lovely — and very old — copper beech tree. She has weathered many a storm, sometimes losing a branch, but always surviving to see another sunrise. I’m hoping her roots are deeply embedded and she’s braced again this time. Wearing a full canopy of leaves makes her more vulnerable to high winds. Fingers crossed the old girl withstands Sandy.
