On Tuesday I read my humorous essay, “The Perfect Pair of Sunglasses,” published in the recently released Chicken Soup for the Soul, Married Life! aloud to a group of more than 70 people at the Montclair Public Library (MPL) in Montclair, New Jersey. The reading and reception, sponsored by the MPL and The Write Group (TWG) of Montclair, showcased three Northern New Jersey writers Lynn Maddalena Menna of Hawthorne, Stephen Rusiniak of Wayne and me. Carl Selinger of The Write Group was our personable Master of Ceremonies. Lynn and Stephen, both of whom have had essays included in previous Chicken Soup books, agree with me that having an essay chosen for inclusion in this best-selling series is a thrill — 1st time or 8th time.
Montclair’s TV34 sent a videographer to film us; I have included a link to the video below. You know, just in case you want to watch it! Of course, if you live in the Montclair area you can see the reading on your big-screen TV; it will be rebroadcast (check local listings) periodically over the next three weeks.
When you read your work aloud, hear the audience’s reactions, field questions, then get to visit with people who showed up because they are fans of Chicken Soup in general or you in particular it’s the joyful culmination of the writing process. And it gave me the opportunity to dress in something other than jeans and a T-shirt.
I appreciate my family, friends and fellow writers who attended the event as well as those of you who live far, but sent your best wishes. Thank you for your support! Lynn, Stephen and I enjoyed the evening tremendously.
To celebrate the reading I am offering you, my readers, an opportunity to win a Chicken Soup for the Soul, Married Life! book. Yes, this is a giveaway. Please pass the word. To enter this random drawing just leave me a comment on today’s post. Simple, right? I will draw two names at random and announce the winners on Wednesday, October 3 by 5pm.
