New Beginnings? Road Trip to Hampton Lake in SC

My husband Mike and I have been on the hunt — “Operation ReloSouth” — for the perfect retirement location. We want to live in a less-expensive, more relaxed area of the country near water. With better weather (no snow) than what we have here in Northern New Jersey. This is our story.

My husband Mike and I bought a lot in a planned community called Hampton Lake; it’s about halfway between Savannah, GA and Hilton Head Island, SC in a town called Bluffton. To me that’s like being halfway to heaven: an historic city with all its wonderful amenities and a beach resort with, well, beaches both within a 20-minute drive of me. And epic fishing for Mike. We found Hampton Lake during our ReloSouth foray last fall.

Wanting to learn more about the Bluffton, SC area before I actually commit to leaving New Jersey, the state where I grew up, worked hard, raised a family and had many, many good times, I am staying three weeks in Hampton Lake in a rental cottage. I am going to explore the area…mostly on my own since Mike does have a full-time job and it happens to be in New York City.

Yes, this will be the first time in my life that I’m completely alone in a new location — no friends or family — left to my own devices. When I drop Mike off at the airport tonight I can’t even imagine what it will be like. After all, we’ve been together, a team, for almost 33 years. And when he’s been away from home I’ve been surrounded by our two kids, cats, friends and family. Am I nervous? Nope. I’m excited!

Would you like to follow along on my adventure? Would you be up for this kind of adventure?

Darlene: You are very brave. I admire what you are doing. We are only moving to south Jersey and I am already a nervous wreck. Moving away from family and friends. But you are really “moving away”. I would love
    to follow your adventure.

    • Joanne, I’m nervous about relocating just like you, but I am also determined to see more of our beautiful United States…and live in a place where I don’t have to shovel snow. Ever. Again.
And I’d love to have you share my adventure.

Wow! That will be an adventure! I’m excited for you and to hear all about your experiences. Sounds like a lovely spot to live in and I hear you re: shoveling snow. I’ll never move back to the north, brrr. Snow is nice when I can visit it and say good-bye quickly 🙂

    • I’m headed out to explore today. Going to look for “the best” (so I’ve heard) farmer’s market and an independent bakery that’s a tea shop!

Wow, Darlene, that’s huge! And it does sound fantastic. I envy you–three weeks alone to explore, design, create, dream, stroll, sip coffee, sip tea, sip white wine at sunset, watch Hoarders till 3 am, experiment with a new blondies recipe, read in the park, draw, paint, meet your new community, explore the farmers market and crochet a sunhat? This sounds like pure heaven. Keep us posted–literally! I want to hear all about it.

    Thanks,
    Renita
